Heather's road to Rio!

Posted by admin on 19 February, 2016

Welcome to our brand new rider blog from our Para dressage rider Heather Bennett. In the lead up to Rio, we thought we'd be a bit nosy and find out how a top pro prepares for the competition of their lives and share with you all, so here is the first of Heather's blog...

February has been a busy month so far, and we’re only half way through! We started with a busy few days at Squad Training with both Tika and Star, followed by the Equestrian Team GBR briefing for Rio at Bisham Abbey.  Lots of potential Rio athletes all under one roof, going through the Olympic guidelines – the atmosphere was great! It looks set to be an amazing Paralympic Games, and I’m so excited to be on the Long List.

Last week Tricia came out to fit Star with a new saddle, and the first proper ride I had in it was at a competition! Although brand new, the saddle doesn’t ride like it at all – no breaking in required, just straight down to business…Despite having had a hectic week, newbie Star (LJT Streisand) was an angel at Solihull RC and despite the fact that we’re still getting to know each other, we scored a very respectable 71.45% in the team test and 73.05% in the championship test. Tricia came along to help which I’m very grateful for.

I’m really pleased with my new saddle, Tricia and the Childéric team are so helpful
and supportive and are always at the end of the phone, or come out to see us, if
the horse changes shape or I feel different. And I know this service isn’t reserved for their ambassadors, it’s just their ethos!

We’re off to Squad Training again this weekend, and then gearing up for the Para Winter Championships at Vale View at the end of March.  I’ve also just had the fantastic news that both Tika and Star have been selected for Deauville 3* in April,
I’m so excited that both girls are going!

Till next time....
